Miami-Dade County Public Schools District 1 School Board Member Dr.Steve Gallon III was announced as a recipient of the National School Boards Association Council of Urban Boards of Education’s (CUBE) prestigious 2017 Benjamin Elijah Mays Lifetime Achievement Award. The Benjamin Elijah Mays Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who—during his or her lifetime—has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the educational needs of urban school children through his or her service as a local school board member.

Dr. Gallon’s almost thirty years as an educator in which he served as a teacher, principal, district administrator, and Superintendent of Schools, and now District 1 Miami-Dade County School Board Member has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advocacy and equity for students in the urban core. Since Dr. Gallon’s decisive election to the School Board on November 8, 2016, he has focused on policy issues such as improving under-performing schools, student discipline, school safety, economic parity, school facilities, and expanding quality district programs.

Dr. Gallon will be recognized at CUBE’s 50th Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 28-30, 2017, The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, 921 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70112.

The award will be presented to Dr. Gallon at a special luncheon to be held on September 29, 2017.

Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays is remembered for his outstanding leadership and service as a scholar, teacher, minister, mentor, author, and civil rights activist. Dr. Mays became a member of the Atlanta Board of Education in 1969 and served as its president from 1970-1981, where he tirelessly worked to provide equal educational opportunities for children. He died on March 28, 1984.
