Today I stood with a heavy heart and angry spirit. I pray that God comforts both.
For the first time in my 25 years working in education in the urban core, I had to stand with and help comfort one of my former students who lost his 6-year old son to senseless gun violence. The family is grief stricken. The community is seemingly fed up.
A parent burying their child is not the natural order of things. Sadly, it’s becoming the “new normal” in our own backyard.
Only we can achieve the change we seek and our children and communities deserve.
The time is now.
