Dade schools will take closer look at F schools

Miami-Dade Public Schools will begin tracking  improvement plans, teacher quality and resource allocation at F schools in the district under a proposal put forward by District 1 Board Member Steve Gallon. The measure, presented at the Dec. 14 board meeting, passed unanimously. All eight of Gallon’s colleagues signed on as sponsors —- a feat that reportedly almost never happens. The plan also calls for the district to establish an advisory board comprised of educators and community stakeholders, similar to established committees that deal with construction and audit. Gallon Asks District for New Emergency Policy

Miami-Dade County Public Schools is looking to have a stocked pantry to have food ready for low-income children in the event a hurricane shuts disrupts the area. That’s the plan offered in a policy item that likely will be approved at Wednesday’s school board meeting. The proposal by District One Board Member Steve Gallon III would require school officials to distribute food to students in the event of a state or district-mandated school closure. A bond-new Myrtle Grove Center

Miami-Dade County District 1 School Board member Steve Gallon III, Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, staff, students and community leaders gathered at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center last Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting event as part of the approval of a $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The bond received nearly 70 percent approval by voters in 2012. At the time, Carvalho guaranteed 100 percent local reinvestment of funds which included an upgrade or renovation of each school and technology equity across all schools. The Myrtle Grove K-8 renovation project included site improvements and classroom technology upgrades throughout the school at a total value.
