COVID-19 UPDATE FROM SCHOOL BOARD VICE CHAIR DR. STEVE GALLON III
CONTACT: Pavi’Elle Phillips
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF DR. STEVE GALLON III
March 18, 2020
I hope that this communication finds you and your family safe and secure, and taking the necessary precautions in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the community, state, nation, and world. During this time, please know that I, along with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, continue to stand with you, our community, and most important, our students.
As you may be aware, the District closed schools beginning Monday, March 16, 2020. Subsequently, on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis mandated school closures throughout the State of Florida through April 15, 2020.
In anticipation of our own school closures, our school district took advance steps to provide for student learning and meals during the initial phase of school closings. These steps included the provision of and access to online learning activities and resources, as well as the provision of breakfast and lunch for all students at their home or neighborhood school.
In addition to the extended closure announcement made by Governor DeSantis, all required state tests for the remainder of the year have been cancelled, including those required for promotion and graduation. Additional information will be provided as to the implementation and impact of these decisions. However, none are anticipated to have a negative impact on students’ promotion or graduation.
In the interim, please stay tuned to updates regarding the District’s plans for operation and student services at http://www.dadeschools.net. You may also follow me on Facebook at Dr. Steve Gallon III or on twitter @docstevegallon.
You may also contact the District Hotline at 305-995-HELP for more information and/or assistance.
Again, please remain safe and take the necessary precautions for you and your family.
I remain here to support you.
Steve Gallon III
