PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF DR. STEVE GALLON III

December 1, 2022

District 1 School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III was appointed by the Florida School Boards Association to represent Section 4 of the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Representative Assembly.

The FHSAA Representative Assembly meets annually to consider and act on proposals to amend the Association’s Bylaws. It is currently is comprised of 67 delegates from across Florida– 32 public high school delegates elected from 32 legislative divisions, 16 private high school delegates elected respectively from every two legislative divisions combined, four middle school delegates elected from each administrative section, one district school superintendent from each section, one district school board member from each section, two home education representatives, one charter schools representative from each section, and the Commissioner of Education or his designee.

The Representative Assembly must act only upon those proposals submitted by member schools, the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, or any one of the Association’s advisory committees. The Representative Assembly, acting as a whole, cannot develop its own proposal for consideration. A two-thirds majority vote of the Representative Assembly is required to adopt any proposed amendment.

Dr. Gallon has been a deliberate, steadfast, and unwavering voice on issues of high school athletics. As an elected School Board Member in Miami-Dade County, he successfully proffered actions and policy changes to improve access, equity, and fairness for student-athletes.

In 2018, it was Dr. Gallon that successfully proffered an item which called for the reclassification of schools that propelled a record number of schools from Miami-Dade County to be able to compete for a State Title in 2019. The subsequent change made by the FHSAA led to a virtual sweep of the football state titles for Miami-Dade County, winning 7 out of 8 championships.

Years later, the FHSAA, would again establish a new classification system which stirred controversy and some contempt among many schools in Miami-Dade County and the South Florida region. Dr. Gallon’s experience and knowledge as a former teacher, high school principal, and Superintendent of Schools should bring a new voice to decisions made by the FHSAA.

“As a former student athlete, high school principal, Superintendent of Schools, and now elected School Board Member, I truly understand the learning and lifelong value and impact that interscholastic sports has on students,” he said. “I am deeply honored and humbled by this appointment and will continue to lend my advocacy and voice to issues of interscholastic sports in Miami-Dade County and throughout the state of Florida.”
